Point-E, AI Text To 3D Model

OpenAI released the open source Point-E, AI text-conditional 3D object generation which produces 3D models in only few minutes on a single GPU. Point-E first generates a single synthetic view using a text-to-image diffusion model, then produces a 3D point cloud using a second diffusion model on the generated image. The limitation of point clouds is that they don't capture an object's fine-grained shape or texture. That limitation is overcome by training an additional AI model to convert the generated point clouds to meshes (the collection of vertices, edges and faces that define an object).

The Point-E generated point clouds could be used to fabricate real-world objects through 3D printing, and with future enhancements could find its application in game and animation areas.
