AI Art - A Brief Introduction

The proliferation of AI Art, AI Image Generators are based on the advanced in text-to-image research recently. In brief, text-to-image models generally combine a language model, which transforms the input text into a latent representation, and a generative image model (see Generative Adversarial Network section below), which produces an image conditioned on that representation. A latent space, also known as a latent feature space or embedding space, is an embedding of a set of items within a manifold in which items resembling each other are positioned closer to one another in the latent space. Position within the latent space can be viewed as being defined by a set of latent variables that emerge from the resemblances from the objects.

The most effective models have generally been trained on massive amounts of image and text description of these images.

Recently, state of the art text-to-image models, such as OpenAI's DALL-E 2, Google Brain's Imagen and Stability AI's Stable Diffusion began to approach the quality of real photographs and human-drawn art.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs)

• A GAN consists of two main parts: generator and discriminator. Each is a type of large neural network. The generator learns to generate plausible data. The generated instances become negative training examples for the discriminator. The discriminator learns to distinguish the generator's generated data from real data. The discriminator penalizes the generator for producing implausible results.

• When training begins, the generator produces obviously poorly synthesized data, and the discriminator quickly learns to tell that it's generated data. As training progresses, the generator gets closer to producing output that can fool the discriminator. Finally, if generator training goes well, the discriminator gets worse at telling the difference between real and fake. It starts to classify generated data as real, and its accuracy decreases.
